the book i m gonna recommend is by 1 of my fav authors. she is a children's books author, and NO she is not JK Rowling. she is also a co-founder of sheroes central, the forum where kids, teens, n writers go to talk bout great she-roes of fantasy, fiction, history and in present day life. she is TAMORA PIERCE. the books i m gonna talk about are of her later set. she has been writing since 20+ years ago?
the book is called TRICKSTER'S CHOICE. its sequel is TRICKSTER'S QUEEN. both are wonderful books. the whole series of these 2 books are about this young girl,Aliane(Aly). she is the grand daughter n daughter of the kingdom's spymasters, and the daughter of a living legend, Alanna the Lioness, the first female knight for a very long time. well as u can tell its a spy story but its very very good.
Aly is a flirt, a girl who is so intelligent that all her suitors bore her, n generally she is spoilt. she wants to be a spy for her father, as she was trained in spy business from the cradle. along the way she gets her carried off n end up in a foreign land. then she is visited by the Trickster a god who is fortune, good n bad, n very very mischevious also a patron good of all who deal in espionage(or rather unwanted patron god..hehe). Aly n the Trickster strike a wager of sort, n she gets her wish, she becomes a spy working for a rebellion for the enslaved native ppl of the country. in TRICKSTER'S CHOICE she has to protect the children of the family she is working for, in TRICKSTER'S QUEEN, the conspiracy has gone full blast n its time to crown a queen n dethrone the evil, ruthless n mad regents and the boy king the command, and set the country to rights again.
like any hero, Aly has help and allies, foremost in the form of the Trickster god, Kyprioth, who is more nuisance than anything. then she has alies in the family whom she is to protect, Sarai the eldest daughter, who is wild, emotional, caring, a flirt, a brilliant horsewoman, n talented at the sword; Dove the younger daughter who is the wise, intelligent, n bookish child of the family; and thier parents the duke and Winna who think the Aly is the messenger of the god Mithros(the sun god n whom the "foreigners" worship). Aly also has a very strange aly in Nawat a crow who turned into a man, a very handsome man, who sparks romance in the story, and continuesly offers her "sparklies" and juicy grubs so that Aly will fall in love with him, n have nestlings together.
the world for this book is Tortall the setting is olden time Malaysia, or Indonesia. they have plenty of words that sound similar, like Ombak(the name of a ship), Duan(the name for a old man or boss), Malubesang(name of island), and Luarin(name for foreign ppl of white skin in general). they also mostly dress in sarongs. but there is also a mix of western in it coz the men at arms use longswords and spears etc, n there is a sense of a huge western medival type court n kings n queens, n also western clothing like gowns, breeches, vests, tunics etc.
it is definitely a great read. its full of humor, suspense, and thrill. it will keep u up late at night and it will be very dificult to put in down. its great with all the conspiracy, n how is it not to love a trouble some god? mischief is written all over the place and all the naughty thing Aly does. plus the great kicker of Nawat's attempts will have u rolling and laughing.
to all who fear thick books, i can asure its not a very thick book either and that u will be flipping page after page and not even worry about how thick it is.
